Från knattecurling till världstoppen

Det började med knattecurling som liten tjej i Sundbybergs Curlingklubb. Syskonen började spela curling redan som barn, med stöttning från föräldrarna Mats och Monica, som själva också spelat. ”Vi började med knattecurling när vi var små och sedan blev pappa Mats vår juniortränare,” säger Isabella till DN.

Wranå was born in Vällingby, in Stockholm Municipality. Hennes väg till curlingens toppskikt gick via Härnösands gymnasium, känt för sitt curlinggymnasium. Redan som tonåring visade hon talang och ledaregenskaper.

Born and raised in Stockholm, Wranå developed an early interest in curling through her family’s involvement in the sport, as both of her parents, Mats and Monika Wranå, were active curlers. She began participating in local junior curling programs in the Stockholm area during her youth, initially joining Sundbybergs Curlingklubb, where she honed her skills in the club’s youth initiatives.

Juniorernas drottning med historisk triumf

Som skip för Sveriges juniorlandslag skrev Isabella historia. As a junior, Wranå led Sweden to gold at the 2017 World Junior Curling Championships, defeating Scotland in the final, and silver at the 2018 edition, losing to Canada in the championship game. Det var Sveriges första kvinnliga junior-VM-guld någonsin.

This unit’s chemistry was evident in their breakthrough at the 2017 World Junior Curling Championships in Gangneung, South Korea, where they clinched Sweden’s first women’s junior world title with a 7-4 victory over Scotland in the gold medal game. Laget imponerade med a dominant 9-2 round-robin record, underscoring Wranå’s leadership in high-pressure scenarios.

Framgångarna fortsatte året efter med silver i VM. Building on this momentum, her team captured silver at the 2018 World Junior Curling Championships in Aberdeen, Scotland, falling 8-4 to Canada in the final despite an undefeated 9-0 round-robin performance. En insats som visade hennes konstanta utveckling som strategisk skip.

Prestationerna belönades redan tidigt. In 2018, she was inducted into the Swedish Curling Hall of Fame. Bara 21 år gammal hade hon redan förtjänat en plats bland Sveriges curlingelit.

Genombrott och Grand Slam-triumf

Övergången till seniorspel blev början på något stort. Following her success in junior curling, including a gold medal at the 2017 World Junior Curling Championships, Isabella Wranå transitioned to senior women’s competition, joining the Swedish national squad and forming her own team for elite events in the late 2010s. Her early senior appearances included participation in domestic tournaments, where she quickly established herself as a competitive skip.

Den 16 april 2023 skedde det historiska. Transitioning to senior competition, she has skippered Team Wranå to notable victories, including the 2023 Players’ Championship—the first Grand Slam of Curling women’s title for a Swedish team—via a 6–5 win over Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni in the final. Finalen mot världsmästarinnorna blev en maktdemonstration. In the game, Wranå took a commanding lead in the fourth end, making an open hit for three to take a 4–1 lead. Tirinzoni scored a single in the fifth, but Wranå replied by getting a deuce in the sixth. En tidig 4-1-ledning som aldrig släpptes.

OS-guld och historiskt syskonsuccé

Tillsammans med storebror Rasmus nådde Isabella curlingens absoluta topp. In mixed doubles, Wranå partnered with her brother Rasmus to win the 2024 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, defeating Estonia 8–4 in the final, and as of May 2025, they were selected to represent Sweden at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

VM-guldet 2024 blev startskottet för något ännu större. Isabella Wranå achieved 97% accuracy during the final, delivering the decisive last shot to secure the victory and make Olympic history for Sweden. History was made at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium on February 10, 2026, as Swedish siblings Isabella and Rasmus Wranå clinched Sweden’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in mixed doubles curling, edging out the United States duo of Korey Dropkin and Cory Thiesse in a dramatic 6–5 final.

”It’s a perfect shot for me to have, a takeout,” Isabella Wranå said. ”But of course you’re nervous. It’s the last shot and you know if you make it, it’s an Olympic gold. But I felt like we kept the calm. Den avgörande stenen blev hennes livs viktigaste kast.

Vägen till OS-guld var inte spikrak. The road to gold began with a challenging round-robin phase. Sweden finished fourth with a 5–4 record, teetering on the edge of elimination after dropping three consecutive games. But as Isabella put it, ”Mixed doubles, anything can happen.”

Arvet efter en curlinglegend

Sweden’s gold is not just a personal achievement for Isabella and Rasmus but a testament to the country’s enduring curling excellence—building on the successes of teams led by Niklas Edin and Anna Hasselborg, both of whom have left indelible marks on the sport. Isabella har tagit över stafettpinnen och fört Sveriges curling in i en ny era.

Hennes betydelse sträcker sig långt utöver medaljerna. Som förebild för unga curlingspelare och ambassadör för sporten fortsätter hon att inspirera nästa generation. ”Det är så otroligt häftigt, jag kommer se tillbaka på den här veckan med otroligt mycket glädje,” säger Isabella Wranå i Lilla Sportspegelns reportage. I veckan besökte hon hemmaklubbens juniorlag för att ge dem tips och tricks på hur man utvecklas i sporten.
